ES Engineering Services, a subsidiary of Montrose Environmental Group, is seeking a Plant Operator for a large, anaerobic digestion waste-to-energy facility located in Charlotte, North Carolina. The project is a newly constructed food waste digester that is located near downtown Charlotte. ES Engineering provides a variety of different services to its clients within the areas Water and Wastewater, Biogas, Petroleum and Environmental Compliance. Specifically, the Biogas team is led by the Chairman of the American Biogas Council and is rapidly expanding its client base of anaerobic digestion facilities. ES is part of a larger firm, Montrose Environmental Group, which is a high-growth environmental services company offering Air Quality, Environmental Laboratory, Regulatory Compliance and Engineering services to a diverse range of clients in industry and government.


The Plant Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of plant equipment in connection with the continuous operation of the facility. Responsibilities will include performing routine maintenance, upgrading and improving equipment around the facility, maintaining facility records and other miscellaneous tasks at the site. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating independently in a remote location and a demanding environment, while working collaboratively with the team on site.



  • Perform day-to-day operational tasks at the site, including working with the team to upgrade facility systems, equipment and infrastructure.
  • Perform routine maintenance duties and carry out requests from supervisor; also perform minor building maintenance, grounds maintenance, cleaning and custodial duties.
  • Start, stop and regulate electric motors, pumps, air compressors and other related equipment.
  • Read meters, gauges, and other control and measuring devices; maintain records of facility operations.
  • Collect samples for laboratory testing as necessary; analyze, understand and compute lab sample results in order to improve plant performance and keep in optimum operation.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols for the site.
  • Implementing techniques and methods of process control that will increase plant and operational efficiencies.
  • Keep up-to-date and current on industry trends by completing formal training, reviewing professional publications, and attending professional workshops.
  • Practice safe work practices by following all Company safety rules and OSHA regulations, including attendance at all required safety training programs.
  • Participate in company’s continuous improvement programs and provide support to team efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2+ years of wastewater plant or waste-to-energy facility operations experience
  • Basic understanding of the anaerobic digestion process
  • Solid organization and time/project management skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities (i.e. self-starter, self-motivated)
  • English language competency
  • Must have a valid driver's license in good standing
  • Complete and maintain HAZWOPER certification with the 40-hour HAZWOPR environmental health and safety class, and annual 8-hour refresher classes

  • While performing the duties of this job, it is expected to work rotating shift assignments, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. Standby and on-call duty is required. Some shifts will require working alone.
